Leadership for Sustainability Netwalking

…in and around the Central Belt of Scotland

Walks in great places with sustainability people for worthwhile conversations

Our sustainability netwalks bring together sustainability leaders and pioneers to:

  • share practical experience,
  • spark new ideas and
  • explore the (often unspoken) challenges.

All so we can make greater progress on sustainability in, and through, our work, confident that we’re contributing to meaningful change in the world.

A wonderful way to meet new people and see old friends working in sustainability, in an easy going and beautiful outdoor environment. I highly recommend the combination of chatting, picnics and sunshine!

Cathleen Thomas

Regional Manager, The John Muir Trust

Thought provoking, inspiring and an overall wonderful way to spend a morning. It was great to have so many fascinating conversations and to listen and learn from others about their own journeys in sustainability.

Daniel Todd

Traffic and insights specialist, Blackcircles.com

Combines three of my favourite things – being outside in beautiful parts of Scotland; spending time with interesting people; and working through sustainability challenges with likeminded folks.

Sarah Beattie-Smith

Sustainability Strategy Manager, SSEN Transmission

A great chance to be inspired by others and their sustainability work while enjoying one of Edinburgh’s beautiful back yards.

Fran van Dijk

CEO, One Stone Partners

A lovely way to explore new places, get active, connect with like-minded people and explore ideas. I thoroughly enjoyed my walk – it helped me to re-frame challenges and gave me a real boost.

Becky Plunkett

Ecology and Biodiversity Officer, West Lothian Council

Expect…

  • A gentle pace with an emphasis on enjoying the place, the company and the conversations.
  • Walks on tracks and paths with occasional muddy or steep sections.
  • Breaks to admire the view, have some coffee and food, and open up discussions.

Good to know…

  • For most walks you don’t need to be particularly fit or have any special kit beyond an ordinary waterproof jacket and walking boots.
  • Some walks are in more remote and rugged areas. For these you may need to be fitter, have some experience of hill walking, and have better quality boots and waterproofs.
  • Check each walk for details, read “enjoy netwalking safely” below, and ask us for advice.

Growing social capital for sustainability action

If we’re to make greater progress on sustainability and climate in our organisations, within and across sectors, and as a nation, we need to get better at collaboration. Effective collaboration requires strong social capital – the networks which connect us, the levels of trust between individuals and groups, and access to knowledge and resources.

Sustainability netwalking fosters social capital for sustainability action by creating time and space for sustainability leaders to meet, connect and explore both their distinct perspectives and the common ground they share.

Supporters of sustainability netwalking include…

The Scottish Forum on Natural Capital which brings together public, private and voluntary sector organisations to protect, value and rebuild Scotland’s natural capital.

The Scottish Leadership Institute which is focused on improving the leadership practices adopted by leaders at all levels in Scottish organisations.

The Wellbeing Economy Alliance Scotland is working with others to create an economic system designed to deliver good lives for all on a healthy planet.

If your organisation would like to offer its members the personal, professional and organisational benefits of netwalking, and to help grow Scotland’s social capital for sustainability action, please get in touch.

Participation statement

At Realise Earth Ltd we want you to enjoy your walks with us safely. Walking in the countryside and in the hills exposes us to a certain amount of hazard and risk. These risks can involve: becoming cold and wet; minor cuts and bruises; damage to personal clothing and belongings; injury and, in some extreme and uncommon circumstances, loss of life. As a participant it is important that you consider this and fully understand and are aware of possible outcomes.

We aim to lead all walks safely; minimising the exposure to the risks involved. Our activities have been risk assessed and our walk leaders hold suitable qualifications and experience to deliver the activity. Realise Earth Ltd holds suitable liability insurance.

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) are the representative body for walkers, climbers and mountaineers in the UK and set good industry standards as such. They offer the following participation statement that we ask you to agree to:

“The BMC recognises that climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.”

While you’re with us, or in advance, please ask at any time about the activities, including their suitability for you, your health and clothing. If you choose not to take this advice, or to disregard any advice given, you do so voluntarily and accept liability for all resulting injuries or damage that your actions cause to you or others within your group.
